1. Early position – This is considered the worst position in poker, since you have to act first without knowing how any of the other players are going to play their hands. In early position is best to play high pairs like AA,KK,QQ, JJ, high unsuited cards like AK,AQ, KQ and QJ sometimes, high suited cards like AK,AQ, AJ, KQ, QJ, and so on.
2. Middle position – You have to act after the players in early position, so you get to see how they play their hands , but there are still quite a few players to follow you.You can play a little looser in middle position than early position, but you still need to be cautious. In this position is best to play high suited cards like AT, KT, QT, high unsuited cards like AJ, AT and so on, middle pairs TT, 99, 88.
3. Late position – This position allows you to have a lot more information about how the hand is going before you have to make your own option of whether to call, bet, raise, or fold. If no one has bet in a round, the players in late position may win the pot plainly by betting any amount – this is called “betting position”. Many poker players know about betting position and may call a bet as a bluff when the dealer or one before him bets, but it works often enough that it’s worth trying once in a while. In late position you can play a lot of hands like suited connectors, such as 9T, 78, 67 etc. Small pairs like 44, 33, 22 and hands like A9, A8, A6.
4. The button – The button seat is the best seat in the hand , because on every round except for before the flop, you will be last to act no matter what. You have a big advantage for this hand so you should play as many hands as possible from the button .

This is a rough guide, pay attention to the other players playing types (tight, loose, etc) so you can presuppose what hands you might be up against. Still, if you stick to this your poker earnings should grow.

Peter Eastgate winner WSOP 08

Young Danish professional poker player, Peter Eastgate, made history at the 2008 WSOP when – at only 22 years old – he became the youngest player ever to win the Main Event.  Before this, Phil Hellmuth’s earlier record setting victory at age 24 allowed him to carry this title.  For his efforts in this tournament after defeating Ivan Demidov heads up, Eastgate won $9,152,416.  Unfortunately for him he lives in Odense Denmark and Denmark is infamous for having one of the most heavy-handed taxation codes of any country in the European Union.  Young Eastgate was then taxed at a whopping 45% rate for the first $4 million he earned and at 75% for the remainder of the money, leaving the youngest WSOP Main Event champion with an estimated $2.5 million of his $9,152,416 fortune.  

The Danish Supreme Court now also ruled that a 35 year-old unemployed man, who allegedly had been earning a living as an online poker player, would have to be taxed as a “professional gambler” and subjected to a similar tax rate as Eastgate.  Over the past year, the Danish man in question, who has not been identified in court documents, allegedly earned approximately €26,000 from playing at several online poker rooms.  Although the Supreme Court refused to uphold a fine issued by a lower court, the resulting tax bill amounts to €11,700 for the unemployed poker player and this ruling is being upheld by the Higher court. Whilst the controversy around the gender test of 800 m runner Caster Semenya from South Africa is hitting headlines all over, it has come to light that the recent winner of an “All ladies event” at the Borgata in Atlantic City is a man!  Abraham Korotki (65) from Ventnor City, N.J., will however not be subjected to any gender testing since he is undisputedly a man!  He took home the trophy and $20,982 first prize. Two couples were playing Texas hold’em one evening. Jeffrey “Iceman” Lisandro, known as one of the best Seven Card Stud players in the world, proved he is just that at the 2009 World Series of Poker by being the first person to ever win

all three 7-card Stud disciplines in the same year.  Despite his phenomenal talent for stud, he is still regarded as one of the best all rounders.  Lisandro bagged $125K in the $1500 buy-in Seven-Card Stud event, $431K in the $10K Seven Card Stud 8 or Better, and $188K in the $2500 Razz event for a total of over $740K in ’09 WSOP earnings.  For his amazing feat Jeffrey Lisandro received the ’09 WSOP Player of the Year award.  His poker nickname is “Iceman” and this was originally thought to refer to his seemingly cold and calculating disposition while playing although he said in an interview that he got the name because he is known for chewing gum (specifically Ice gum) at the poker table to reduce tells.  During his breaks in one tournament he use to run to the sweet shop to get some ICE gum and the lady used to say “The Iceman is here”.  He liked it and that name kinda stuck.  J He is a top high-stakes specialist cash game player and plays in most of the world’s most prestigious poker tournaments.  Read the rest of this entry »

Isabelle “No Mercy” Mercier does not have an apartment anywhere – she is homeless, living out of her suitcase, and loving it.  She is known for her intense stare during play and that is how she got her nickname – she uses the same name online whilst playing to hone her skills.  “I sold everything except some clothes and a suitcase and I went for it, for fulfilling my dreams. It is probably every Poker Player’s dream or goal – to participate in the World Series of Poker.  The WSOP is most certainly one of the most popular, if not the most popular, international poker tournament held in Las Vegas annually.  Though the World Series of Poker made its official debut in 1970, the idea of the Horseshoe’s annual tournament was actually conceived more than two decades earlier.  Horseshoe Casino patriarch and poker icon Benny Binion is widely credited with dreaming up with the championship format. But laurels should probably go to two lesser-known men – Tom Moore and Vic Vickrey. Moore, a Texan, was part-owner of the Holiday Casino in Reno. Christopher Bryan Moneymaker was the 2003 World Series of Poker main event champion who has just more than $300,000 in tournament winnings since his unbelievable victory which is generally credited for being one of the main catalysts for the poker boom in the years following his win, which has since been dubbed the “Moneymaker effect”.  Chris proved that it is possible for an unknown, relatively inexperienced person to win a big poker tournament.  His last name is not a fictitious name, and is in fact his real name.  His ancestors made silver and gold coins and chose the name Moneymaker. When it comes to the future of poker, things seem to be more optimistic. 

Poker Players Alliance organized the first National Poker week during the week of July 19-25 and the outcome seems to be very positive – now, more than ever before the fight to legalise online poker in the States seems to be gaining impetus.  “I think we made a very strong impression on lawmakers who weren’t aware of online poker or maybe even opposed it,” said PPA executive director John Pappas. “We raised the overall understanding of the situation.”  Read the rest of this entry »
