The River card is the last community card to be dealt face up on the table, after burning a card.  Betting is at the same limit as the Turn.  This is the last chance you have to make a poker hand.  Not only are you calculating your own poker hand, you are also trying to understand what other players may have.  It is great if you made a good poker hand, but you also need to double check to see if you could be beaten.

After the betting is completed on the River, the Dealer will ask all remaining players in the pot to turn over their card, starting with the first person to the left of the dealer that is still in the pot.  Should the first player turn over the best hand, the other players may muck their cards.  The dealer will announce the winner and push the chips to the winner.  Chasing your hand to the River is usually not a very good strategy.  If you do this all the time, you will most certainly lose out at some point.  You may be lucky from time to time and you may decide to take such a risk depending on the hand in play, but it is certainly not a good strategy to apply if you are planning on becoming a good poker player.  Players who often chase hands until the last card is seen as very loose or aggressive players and I have not seen many of them ever reaching the final table or actually making money from poker.  Yes sure, follow your gut feel from time to time – it may just be your poker angel watching over you at that point – but as a rule, don’t push your luck too much.  You will run out of it.  Don’t get known as a “River Rat”.  :-)
