Various varieties of poker games
5-CARD STUD POKER – This is probably the purest form of the Poker game and where everything started. This form of Poker produced Poker faces of note
You got dealt your 5 cards and that was it. The Poker gods were either with you or not. You had to fold them, pretend that you have a great hand or if you really had a great hand, cast some doubts with your opponents so that you could lure them into betting action to maximise your profits. This form of Poker was mostly about the psychology around poker, guts and the ability to mask your real emotions. Players were usually not that patient and wanted more action, more of a chance to play in the hand. This need resulted in the evolution of 5 card stud poker into the 5 card draw.
5-CARD DRAW was very similar to Stud Poker, but with a very important twist that allowed Players more Poker action. After the 5 cards were dealt to each player, there would be a round of betting. Then each player in turn could exchange one or more of the cards in his hand for new cards from the deck, to try and improve their hand. Then there would be a further round of betting. The result was that Players had the opportunity to improve their own hands and there was twice the opportunity to try to bluff or manipulate your opponents. Some players consider this form of poker as the purest form of poker, but it is certainly not as popular as many other versions.
