Keeping track of money spent on poker
It is important that you keep track on the amount of money that you spend playing poker. Your bankroll is the amount of money that you have set aside or budgeted to fund your poker hobby with. It does not matter what your financial status is. The right thing to do is to keep track of how much poker is costing you. On the one hand, this is a very good indication of how well you are actually doing as a poker player and on the other hand it is obviously also a good way of keeping track that you don’t overspend on Poker so that you land yourself in a situation where you cannot pay your bills. Even as a social player who plays just for the fun, you still need to be fully aware of how you are doing. In order for good players to win, there must obviously be other players who lose their money. Most of these players in the latter group who are losing their money, are under the impression that they are either breaking even or even winning. If you seem to be in the latter category of losing most of the time, you are playing wrong, don’t have the right strategy, playing in the wrong games or just playing with the wrong people. Change something! It is probably best to start with an absolute minimum of 20 times your usual buy-in as a bankroll. Then, if you do hit a few bad games where you lose out, it won’t be so bad spread over 20 games. However, if your losses are more than this, be careful. You are doing something wrong and need to improve your game. If you are indeed as good as you think you are, you will find that your bankroll will increase irregularly but consistently over time and you will be able to buy into bigger games. At the end of the day, poker is a game about winning. Find the game that you can beat consistently and build up your bankroll through this. Take it slowly, step by step. Don’t suddenly believe that you have now become a poker pro and move on to high stake games!
